I know very little about bikes, but am looking for one... Would this one in your opinion be a good choice for a 10-15 mile commute (santa clara to mountain view)?

Hi Stuart,

I really like the "Nexus" and "Alfine" line of hub systems created by Shimano. Unless you have a lot of hills on your ride, they provide eight gears, and eight is enough. The upside is low maintenance, a high degree of reliability, and the ability to shift gears while stopped. That latter is simply awesome. Imagine if we could only shift gears on cars when they were moving!

I would suggest finding some bikes that use these systems and then test-riding them.

Good luck, and be careful out there!
