Actually Al Gore didn't just show up - Vint Cert and Robert Kahn (guys who could definitely take credit for inventing the internet, at least pretty important parts of it) substantially clarified Al's role back in 2000, here: http://www.interesting-people.org/archives/interesting-people/200009/msg00052.html
It makes for a pretty interesting read, I'd encourage any one reading this to check it out.
...and Vint, at least, continues to do so in present day - I've been in the room when he's done it, and he's quite passionate about setting the record straight.

Hi Ross,
Thanks for the great link. Yes, I didn't mean for the Gore comment to be taken tongue-in-cheek, as I'm aware of his policy influence in this area. That's why I included him in the same sentence with Berners-Lee.
Such are the hazards of prose communication!
That's a great resource and I will continue to point people in that direction.
