There is a line of academia addressing another aspect of this, specifically the idea that video games will be/are now the new realm for social discourse -- UCSD's Visual Arts Phd program is one such community (http://visarts.ucsd.edu/grad/phd.htm). It will be interesting to see what comes out of the intersection between business, design, and techno/game-savvy users... pay attention to your innovators, no?
